Chaos in Stuttgart
Three games before the end of the season, the situation at Stuttgart Surge is getting worse. After the 3:44 defeat at the Raiders Tirol, the interim head coach announced changes in the coaching staff. On Monday evening it was fixed: Defensive Coordinator Andy Meyer is no longer part of the team.
According to the official announcement, they parted ways by mutual agreement. The details, however, paint a devastating picture of the organization.
The dismissed Meyer does not have this view. "I was dismissed at the bus on Monday morning," he described to me in conversation even before the announcement. So Streeter, who according to Meyer is to become the new sporting director in Stuttgart, relieved him of his duties as DC. Still, Streeter wanted to keep him. So Meyer was to coach the defensive backs, who no longer have a pure position coach since the promotion of Marvin Washington. However, the experienced coach did not want to accept this demotion.
The shutout is surprising in any case. After all, the defense is the real strength of the team, also because of Meyer, who cleverly strengthened the unit. He is also highly regarded by the players, so much so that some even wanted him to be the head coach. His duties will now be taken over by linebackers coach Michael Zeyda. However, it is still unclear whether he will take over the role, as he is said to lack the time to fill this important role in the best possible way due to his job.
However, it is striking that this is already the second trainer for whom there are disagreements about the exact terminology of his end with the franchise. Already Martin Hanselmann confirmed to me that he did not resign, but Surge officials insist that he did. In addition, the departure of Special Teams Coordinator Jemil Hamiko has not been announced, nor has the move of DB Coach Lelan Brickus to Frankfurt Galaxy.
As of now, only six coaches are still employed by the team, which makes it difficult to have a regular training schedule. The highlight was last week, where a training session was canceled after only one hour, because only 3(l) O-linemen were in training. It is questionable why Robin Häberle was dismissed in view of the tense situation and no replacement was brought in. There are also rumblings within the team. At the game in Innsbruck, for example, there were already arguments among the players. Meyer is self-critical: "Unfortunately, Martin and I didn't manage to form a unit.
So there is a lot to do for the people involved. The management around Suni Musa, who only joined the team at the beginning of the year, is also under pressure. After all, the image that the Surge is currently projecting is not conducive to attracting new players. With David Meza and Enrico Pascual, two players already left because of the chaos in the franchise. This may also have played a role in the transfer of forward Benhur Ayra to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. I was confirmed by two different sources that there is still little structure within the organization and that internal communication leaves a lot to be desired.
This already calls Commissioner Patrick Esume on the plan, who on Sunday in Innsbruck should certainly have spoken with those responsible. He has already said publicly that he wants to see more from Stuttgart.
So the next few weeks will be crucial for the entire franchise. In doing so, Streeter must convince his team of his strategy. So it is frightening when only 20% of the players are behind the new philosophy "Surge Ball". It will take a dramatic turnaround with a ruthless analysis if this franchise finally wants to end the negative headlines.
