You may be right. However, why would a player want to stay on a club to play in the Landesliga, when he is probably good enough to join an Oberliga Team with a thin roster and possibly gain good game experience at a higher level than they might on the GFL 2 team. The GFL teams have some huge rosters. Some players remain simply to say they are in the 'GFL' when they sit the bench or don't dress out for games. When they could actually play at a lower level.
I know Americans who travel 2 hours to be one of 6 players (only 4 can dress out) to play special teams just to say they are in the "GFL" - that is ridiculous.

Think you missed my point a little...I am saying that I personally don't think a second team will ever be anything more than a feeder/practice squad for the first team. I know I know, the argument will always be "hey, they have the chance to play on a 1st League team". Well once you realize that most GFL/GFL2 rosters are already 45+ strong that means you really only have 5 free roster spots before you hit the 50-man roster limit for gameday. With that stat alone the long-term viability and marketing "concept" that suggests players will come running "because they have a chance to play GFL" is really flawed and actually leads players astray by giving them false hope. But wait you say, "players will gravitate to this level of competition and rise to the occasion". NOT! Players dropping 150-200 EUR to play this sport will NOT be happy standing on the sidelines slicing bananas and oranges for halftime snacks! And if they are content with that are they really the kind of football players you want to build your program with?
As in most cases, its a dual-edged sword because most players will gravitate to a team where they will get valuable playing time! But wait you say, "my players will be dedicated to improving and playing time isnt their motivation." But then if they don't care about playing time, then are they really going to be dedicated enough to the craft to grind it out and become the solid second team player that earns a 1st team roster spot? Probably not...
So, the big questions are always going to be:
1) How long will guys grind it out on a second team for the "chance" to make the GFL/GFL2 roster when there will only be space for 10-15% of second team players to move up and actually dress (and probably still not contribute) for the 1st team? Why stay and play second fiddle when you can be "Da Man" somewhere else?
2) How many guys will be content playing on a lower league team where despite how good the team might become, there will always be a ceiling on their ability to move up in leagues (currently the BSO states that 2d teams cannot advance beyond RL)?
Take those things and the other items I mentioned in a previous post and the reason 2d teams never really become anything more than a glorified practice squad is clear.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Assuming you have the resources and capital, from a business strategy standpoint 2d teams can be a very viable way to maximize your "brand name", increase your membership rolls, provide added value to sponsors and also further your fan base while at the same time keeping "talent" from going to other area teams (a definite strategy for some programs). So in those ways GFL teams can definitely add "value" to their American Football GFL program. But no one is talking about the "business" reason for establishing a second team so I am not sure if that played a role in the decision making process....
